Ever wanted beach hair? Yeah, so have we. But it’s only for those of us who are lucky enough to have it come naturally, right? WRONG. 100% false. Our beach waves tutorial will show you how to get that ‘just got back from the beach look’ without having to set foot near the ocean. There are products and techniques out there that give you the illusion of that beachy goodness. And we tell you which ones in this feature (and yes, you can even do it with straight hair!).
Straight Hair? Beach Waves Are Possible!
If you have straight hair, we’ll forgive you if you’ve always held the belief that a beach waves hairstyle is simply impossible to achieve. We’re going to quash that popular theory and show you how to beach wave your hair even if you have poker-straight hair.
First of all, you want to let your hair air dry. Don’t let it go near your hairdryer and only lightly towel-dry. Get your hands on a texturizing spray and apply vigorously. Now, what you want to do is take your curling iron and do something a little unorthodox. Take two-inch sections and instead of curling as you normally would, let your hair wrap around the barrel.
Remember, you don’t want things looking too perfect. Take messy sections and just let things look natural. When the curls have cooled (and only then!), use your fingers as a comb and shape accordingly. Use the same texturizer again, but don’t go overboard. If your hair tends to go a little crazy, hold it down using your favourite hairspray.
Struggle to get those waves even after applying the above advice? It’s time for slightly more advanced measures. Get your hands on a small curling iron (1/2-inch is enough) and curl your hair very tight. When you wake up, you’ll have that wavy basis to get that beach look.
Another way to make it work is by using a Flat Iron. The Chi Ultra CHI Red 1-1/2 inch Flat Iron costs just under $100 and is perfect for the job. Take a 1-inch area of your hair just below the root and pull down slowly. Keep rotating while bringing the straightener down the hair, which will give your hair a wavy/curly effect. Don’t try and achieve perfect – the whole point of beach hair is that it looks completely natural!
Don’t have time to use a flat iron or other heated tools? Wearing a bun to bed is the next-best solution and if your hair is happy to cooperate, it may be enough to give you that beach hair look. When you wake up, apply some texturizing sea salt spray to complete the look.
Our Product Recommendation: Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray is the clear winner for those of you with straight hair. It will set you back around $25, but should last you quite a while. Worthy investment!
Wavy Hair? Beach Wave Curls Are Easy!
Those of you with naturally wavy hair will find this beach waves tutorial a piece of cake. The minute you step out of the shower, get some curl cream and distribute evenly. What you’ll then want to do is put your waves in a bun, but keep it relatively loose. Then play the waiting game until your hair is dry. Use a large barrel curling iron to fix those imperfections. To finish the look, turn your head upside down and apply a texturizing spray. Use your fingers to scrunch those curls and you’re done!
Just Remember: It Starts with the Right Haircut
Even if you have the right hair type, you won’t get the perfect beachy hair waves unless you get the right haircut. When it comes to beach hair, it’s all about layering. Tell your stylist to keep those layers around the face, as that’s where the crux of the look is achieved.
Our Product Recommendation: Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls will accentuate your natural wavy hair, giving it that beach hair look you’re looking for. At $22, it’s not cheap but hey… it’s worth it to get those gorgeous hair waves!
John Masters Organics Sea Mist Sea Salt Spray (johnmaster.com) comes in at a slightly cheaper price point of $16.50 and is also excellent. It’s a fully organic product as well and has a lovely lavender smell.
If you struggle with your hair drying out, skip the sea salt sprays and opt for Bumble and Bumble Hair (un)Dressing Creme. It not only injects much-needed moisture to your hair, but it also gives that textured effect your looking for. It’s a little expensive at $29, but you just need a pea-sized amount per application.
Curly Hair? We’ve Got Just the Thing…!
Right, you’re going to have to put a little effort to get that beach hair, but curly hair can definitely get that wavy beach look. We’re not going to say that it’s going to be easy beach waves, but with a little elbow grease (don’t apply to your hair, however!) you can make that beachy hair happen.
While we’ve told the straight-haired ladies that a blow dryer is a no-no, it’s going to be your best friend. Use a round brush to help straighten your hair while you blow dry, but don’t go as far as using hair straighteners (obviously!). To keep those curls from going crazy, apply some anti-frizz serum before you start blow drying. This will protect your hair, particularly if the weather is a little humid.
Our Product Recommendation: Frizz-Ease Hair Serum Extra-Strength Formula is ridiculously effective, yet very affordable as well. Just $9!
Relaxed Hair? Serum + Tools = Beachy Goodness
Relaxed hair needs a little love and care before using heated tools, as it’s already had its fair dosage of chemicals. Use an anti-frizz serum and then create those tousled waves by using a 1-inch curling iron. To give your hair a bit of added texture, use some quality hairspray.
Our Product Recommendation: Blow Pro Weather Girl Anti-Frizz Serum is our go-to choice for relaxed hair and at $16.50, it’s not too expensive. In terms of hairspray, just make sure it’s not the ultra cheap stuff.
