Want thicker hair? Of course you do! We’ve put together a mammoth guide that goes over every tactic, strategy, pill, food, and product that can help you find out how to get thicker hair.
Disclaimer before we start: While our editors and contributors have tried the majority of these products, we can’t claim to be scientists that have grilled these products to the point of having something that can be peer-reviewed. However, where possible, we’ll list all of the evidence we’ve gathered in addition to our own personal experiences.
Looking for A Gentleman’s Guide to Thicker Hair? Sorry, Not This Guide!
If you’re a guy and suffering from hair loss (male pattern baldness), then this article isn’t quite for you. Luckily, we also have a complete guide for men looking to make the most of what they still have. Check it out (coming soon, sorry!). You may still find a couple of these tips useful, however! The shampoos and thickening serums in particular are also guy-friendly.
How to Grow Fuller Hair Without the Snake Oil
The first thing you need to do when looking for that ‘miracle product’ is coming to the realization that it doesn’t really exist. While it’s possible to add true thickness to your hair, you can’t go from thin to thick without adding products and illusion into the equation.
If you see a product that promises how to make your hair thicker in 60 days or less (or whatever the sales pitch is), ignore it. These people are snake oil salesmen that don’t care about you or your hair – they just want your money! With that being said, we’ll show you a couple of products that make a discernible difference in your natural hair’s thickness alongside a selection of ‘boosting’ products that can give the illusion of that proper thickness you’re looking for.
Before we get into the hair vitamins that are specifically geared to getting that gorgeous hair, let’s cover the basics first. Many of us have diets that are a little subpar, with junk food the norm and fruits and veggies nowhere to be seen. So don’t be surprised when you find that you’re missing some of the following:
Without these three, your hair will not be in optimal health. You can obtain a sufficient dosage of these from your everyday foods, but if you need a little kick-start in the right direction then go to your local pharmacy and pick up supplements. These are all 100% and available over the counter.
We’re going to give some specific attention to biotin, part of the so-called vitamin B complex. Biotin helps the body produce collagen, fatty acids, and amino acids – there are all integral components to tissue repair and cell division, which in turn helps the growth of healthy hair.
MSM is another highly touted supplement that helps with speeding up hair growth and ensuring it’s in tiptop condition. The thing to watch out for is websites selling MSM as more than it is. It’s a supplement that possibly helps, but it’s not guaranteed. Plenty of people swear by it, while others claim it doesn’t really do anything.
MSM is one of those additional supplements you can take that may help, but nothing has been legitimately proven through medical trials. However, it’s not going to be harmful. Taking a punt on it is up to you (and your wallet).
If you want to add some MSM via natural channels, you can always opt for the following foods:
- Cow’s Milk
Our Viviscal Review and Experiment
It’s been called the holy grail of getting thick hair, but does Viviscal work? We’re going to give you a slightly annoying answer – it may do and totally depends on your personal circumstances and expectations. We’ve tried it in the past and saw a discernable difference in both thickness and speed of growth. Not only that, the hair quality seemed to go up a notch or two.
It’s all about what you think you’ll get out of it as well. If you’re thinking you’re going to go from naturally thin hair to lusciously thick locks, it’s not going to happen. However, if you’ve been dealing with stress or thinning hair recently, it’ll probably make a big difference.
The best use case for Viviscal is after either a short-term loss of hair, or after mistreatment of it through blow dryers, straighteners, and products – and we’re guilty of these for sure.
For us, we noticed a definite change. Hair felt stronger, the shine was just that little bit nicer, and the overall health of the hair seemed much improved. But for those of our team that just don’t have thick hair to begin with, the results were thicker hair combined with improved quality. And we’re more than happy with that. To us, that’s a bona fide result.
Many other bloggers report the same thing, with thicker and ‘nicer’ hair being common. The problem with Viviscal is that the results aren’t exactly super scientific (yes, that’s a term!). Viviscal naturally has some studies that show improvement, but you can probably take those with a grain of salt. For those of you looking for something a little more proper, this particular review from the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology is definitely encouraging (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3509882/).
How to Make Your Hair Thicker With Products
Once you’ve sorted out your diet and added the right supplements to your regime, it’s time to find the right recipe of products that will give your hair an added boost. This means that even if your hair is naturally quite thin (and you can’t get it any thicker), you can always give an illusion of thickness.
The sheer number of products that can give the appearance of thick hair is at an all-time high, which means us modern girls are in a luxury position. Never before have we been able to turn properly thin hair into something that has some proper volume. Below, we give you a run-down of some of the product you can use – we’ve also delved a little deeper in this guide, where we give you a more complete list.
Volumising and Thickening Shampoos
The easiest way to give your hair an instant thickening boost is through the use of shampoos. Luckily, big and fabulous hair is very much in fashion at the moment – this means plenty of products for you to choose from.
Our favorite brand is easily Aveda. The ingredients are completely natural, the company has a strong ethos against the harming of the environment, and perhaps most importantly (ahem), the products are absolutely excellent. Yes, you’ll be paying for the privilege but it’s worth it!
BONUS TIP: Use dry shampoo to give your hair an extra ‘oomph’. And it’s not just for when you haven’t washed your hair either – use a small amount while styling your hair and you’ll notice additional volume. Batiste’s XXL Volume range works particularly well for this purpose!
The New Route to Thicker Hair: Aveda Invati Review
Aveda’s Invati range is geared towards giving ladies fuller and thicker hair while at the same time slowing down hair loss through breakages. According to their studies, the product can reduce hair loss by 33%.
Many of you will say that you don’t suffer from hair loss, but that’s quite the point (don’t worry, took us a while to get around the idea!). We all lose hair due to breakages, which gives an illusion of less hair. Keeping your hair from naturally falling out means there’s more of it at any one time, meaning fuller hair.
Does Invati help? The girls on our team that have tried it have all noticed a difference. Will it give you that insane volume shown on their marketing materials? Not quite. But still, combine Invati with some thickening lotions and potions and the difference is definitely noticeable.
The Original Thickening Range: Aveda Pure Abundance Review
The Aveda Pure Abundance range has been a favorite of ours ever since its inception. The shampoo, clay conditioner, style prep, foam, hair spray, and tonic all combine to give you incredible volume – don’t worry, you don’t need to get your hands on all of them! The shampoo and conditioner form a good basis (and we know plenty of guys that love the range as well!).
But the real ‘star’ of the Pure Abundance show is the hair potion. It’s essentially a thickening power, just like many of those you’ve seen on the high street before. However, you won’t find anything better than this one!
The reason it works so well is that it’s both a powder and a gel-like substance in one. You rub it together between your fingers and it becomes a light paste that you can use on your roots to give you instant volume. Sprinkle just a dash on your problem areas and no one will ever know you have thin hair. Out of all the products covered in this guide, this is the one that makes the greatest difference. The pot is a little expensive ($24 retail), but it will last you several months easy.
Food for Hair Growth
While supplements are certainly recommended, they’re called ‘supplements’ for a reason – they should not take the spot of a healthy diet that’s low on junk and high on natural goodness.
There are some specific foods that can help get your hair to be in top condition. It may still not be at the point you want (more on additional products you can use later), but you’ll be giving your hair the best shot possible.
Adding fish to your diet is never a bad thing and salmon should be a core component in your recipe list. With plenty of biotin, amino acids, and omega-3 fatty acids all jam-packed in each serving, your hair will thank you.
Stop eating candy, chips, and other junkie snacks. Replace them with healthier varieties such as walnuts. You will not only skip on the poisonous ingredients of manufactured foods, but you will also be including a healthy dosage of magnesium, vitamin E, biotin, and more.
These don’t just come in handy for exercise – bananas are also full of essential nutrients. The calcium and iron included in each banana is almost enough to stop you from needing additional supplements.
If you’re someone that’s into organic food and healthier diet options, then you’ve undoubtedly heard of the goodness found in lentils. We’re talking iron, biotin, vitamin B6, magnesium, and calcium all packed into one delicious dish.
Foods to Avoid
The recipe is simple. Avoid foods that are high in refined sugars, white flour – anything processed is a big no-no. Also stay away from too much red meat. These tips don’t just go for hair, but also apply to your overall health.
Listen, just changing your diet isn’t going to give you thick hair from one day to the next – or ever. That’s the reality and anyone who claims a revolutionary diet changed things is telling untruths (let’s call them liars, point blank).
However, if you’re not treating your body well then chances are your hair could be improved. Instead of starting at a disadvantage, you’ll be back to square one and at the healthiest point your hair could be. Does that make sense?
Getting that thick hair you see on magazine covers and your annoying gorgeous girlfriend isn’t easy. It’s going to take perseverance, trying different things (hey, we’re all unique), and coming to terms with the fact that no matter what we do, sometimes we just have to work with what we’ve got.
