Thicker hair can only be achieved through a combination of strategies. Our epic guide has already given you a breakdown of each and every method available, but we thought we’d delve a little deeper into how to make hair thicker with products. We’re not only going to review the ones that actually work, but we’ll also give you a few pointers of what to avoid and examples of duds that are just hype and won’t get you anywhere.
The Nioxin Review: Fuller Hair with This ‘Advanced’ Technology?
Nioxin claims to be the ‘leading solution for thinning hair’. Lofty claims indeed – but does it live up the billing? With over 25 years in the market, you’d think there just has to be something to this product to make it last as long as it has (with its reputation still intact).
Our verdict? Nioxin will definitely give you a bit of added volume, just don’t expect any miracles. The people that say it doesn’t work tend to get angry that the product hasn’t solved their hair loss problems, or that their natural hair hasn’t gone from thin to thick overnight. It just doesn’t work that way.
Nioxin’s own website claims that 70% of users will notice thicker and fuller hair within a month of using it. And we would say that this claim is probably quite accurate. There’s a high probability that your hair will also seem thicker and fuller, especially if you’ve recently experienced hair loss due to stress or child birth.
The only gripe we have against the ads is the girl with the luscious thick hair. Obviously, that’s not due to Nioxin. She was probably born with great hair to begin with, used thickening shampoos, and finished things off with product and a good boost from a hair dryer for good measure. Don’t expect to get thick hair, be happy with thicker hair.
If you curb your expectations to seeing an improvement rather than ridiculously drastic changes, Nioxin is a good product. Combine it with using the right shampoos and styling products and the compound change will be visible. Remember, we’re looking for an answer on how to grow hair thicker (emphasis on the ‘er’!), not some magic potion that will turn naturally thin hair into instant volume.
Does Nioxin Work for Guys?
The main negative reviews attached to Nioxin are usually attached to the Nioxin products that been specifically geared towards guys. And yes, Nioxin will not stop hair loss in men. It just doesn’t have a significant effect on DHT, nor will it encourage hair growth to the same degree as minoxidil (it works in an entirely different way).
So if you’re reading this Nioxin review and are wondering whether it works for men, the answer is a clear no. However, that doesn’t mean you can incorporate the product range as part of your overall strategy. As long as you combine them with proven hair loss medications, Nioxin can help thicken your hair up by a few percentage points. And for those of us who are happy with small improvements (every little helps!), then it may be worth purchasing the product.
Tigi Bed Head Small Talk Thickifier Review
Many girls call Tigi‘s Bed Head Small Talk their very own ‘miracle product’, creating an illusion of volume even for those of us cursed with those thin strands. If you want to find out how to get thick hair from one moment to the next, just use a little bit of Small Talk. At a retail price of under $20, it’s a steal – Amazon even sell it for less than that. It’s a tiny little bottle, but you shouldn’t need more than a single pump per application – for me, it lasts several months.
The feature that really sets this product apart is that your hair doesn’t end up feeling dry or stiff, a tradeoff you often get with many other products that give you volume. Instead, the hair is left smooth to the touch.
It also acts as a styler, giving you a certain level of hold. We know many girls that don’t use hairspray or mousse and just do with a pea-sized amount of Small Talk. To top things off, the smell is absolutely divine. It has a sweet grape smell that isn’t too overbearing, but is lovely for those that get up close!
Aveda Volumizing Tonic Review
At Hair Gurus, we’re basically in love with Aveda products. Not only do they have an ethical approach to their business practices, their products work as well (not an unimportant detail!). With Aveda’s volumizing tonic, we think we’ve found the ideal pre-blow dry product that will work with pretty much anyone. We’ve recommended this fantastic little bottle to countless friends and clients and they’ve always come back with positive reviews.
Aveda’s volumizing tonic is absolutely amazing at creating volume at the roots of your hair, giving you the basis for a thick and full style that will outlast anything the day can throw at you. It works fantastically well when you apply it before blow drying. Don’t go overboard, as a little is more than enough to give you the boost you’re looking for. Focus on the roots in particular, as that’s where the tonic will really make a difference.
How to Make Hair Thicker with the Right Haircut!
Now this technically isn’t a ‘product’, it’s more of a service, but it’s nevertheless worth mentioning here. If you don’t already visit a proper hair salon, shame on you! Even the healthiest and thickest hair needs a proper trim to get that big and fabulous style that’s so in fashion at the moment. We’re not saying you have to spend your life savings and remortgage your home, but at least opt for a hairdresser that costs more than a few dollars – the old adage ‘you get what you pay for’ is very true when it comes to haircuts!
You must let your hairdresser know that you’re looking for volume. Ask your hairdresser how to best approach the question of how to grow thicker hair. He or she should notice that your hair needs certain layering if your hair is naturally thin, but it’s nevertheless worth mentioning regardless. Ask your hairdressers for any tips on how to style the hair yourself, what products they use, and how best to take care of your mop. Don’t take it all as gospel, but learning new techniques is always a new opportunity.
Illusion + Thick(er!) Hair = How to Get Thick Hair!
What we really want you take away from this editorial is the fact that it’s impossible to turn naturally thin hair into a fuller and thicker style that you’ll just wake up with when you get out of bed in the morning. It just doesn’t work that way. Yes, it’s possible to improve what you’ve been given by using products such as Nioxin (as well as vitamins for hair loss, read our guide on that here) but you won’t ever be able to get a drastic change – unless, of course, you’ve gone through a medical issue or pregnancy that’s affected your hair’s natural state.
However, a small improvement compounded with another small improvement can make a difference. Combine that with products that help you achieve an illusion of properly thicker hair is certainly possible. We’ve had many friends declare their infinite jealousy of our full do’s, asking us our secret. We simply tell them how to get thick hair through these ‘tricks’ – not all of us were born with volume!
