Many readers ask us about Shampoo A or B, wondering whether it’s any good for thickening up hair or dealing with hair loss. While we always have a couple of recommendations, we’ve never gathered our combined knowledge to identify the best hair growth shampoo out there… until now.
We’ve literally tried or researched every hair shampoo worth knowing about, at least when it comes to hair loss, thickening, and speeding up growth. So while we’re not doctors or trichologists, we can claim the knowledge of a very savvy shopper. It was difficult to trim our list down, but the following 3 ticked the most boxes. We’ve already covered some of these in our epic guide (and 100% free!) to thicker hair, but we’ve beefed up the data to give you a little extra information.
Rounding Off the Top 3: Invati Exfoliating Shampoo
Now, we’re going to be 100% clear on this right from the get-go. We love Aveda products. Not only does the company take an ethical approach towards the manufacture and distribution of its products, they’re also super effective and make a real difference to your hair. The Pure Abundance range is still a major hit amongst the resident Hair Gurus, still working its magic since its release almost a decade ago.
As you can imagine, we were absolutely giddy (and no, we’re not exaggerating here!) when we heard that the company was releasing a product line specifically geared towards girls suffering from hair loss or thinning hair. And so far, we can report some very positive results.
We all tried the system and noticed a definite improvement in the look and feel of our hair. It felt smoother, stronger, and thicker. The shampoo slows down hair loss due to breakages (very common in women), which means you have more hair on your head at any one time. So while you’re not growing more hair, there’s more of it – make sense?
Close Second: Nioxin Scalp Cleanser
Now, we’re major proponents of Nioxin’s products. The reason their cleanser (i.e. shampoo) doesn’t get a spot higher on this list is the fact that it’s really part of a trio of products: the cleanser, conditioner, and the scalp treatment itself. The first two are really just prepping tools for Nioxin’s true bread and butter, the scalp treatment.
What the shampoo does very effectively is remove excess sebum, debris and dirt that gets in the way of healthy hair growth. Your scalp is given the ideal circumstances for thicker hair, but that doesn’t mean it will actually happen. That’s where the scalp treatment comes in.
However, for what it says it does on the tin, Nioxin’s shampoo is a good option. It also gives a good cosmetic thickening effect, which in many cases is just as valuable as actually growing thicker or additional hair (especially if you’re a girl with naturally thin hair).
The Winner: Revita, Take a Bow!
Revita is perhaps the single shampoo that actually seems to speed up hair growth and stop (or slow down) hair loss at the same time. The ‘magic’ ingredient this shampoo has is ketoconazole, which is mainly used to battle dandruff as well as other scalp conditions. The nice little side effect you get, however, is that it promotes hair growth. The apple polyphenol is meant to improve circulation in the scalp, while other ingredients such as biotin, MSM, and emu oil are all known to help create the perfect environment for healthy hair growth.
While we don’t think this shampoo can stop hair loss in men suffering from male pattern baldness, we do think it’s the best shampoo out there when it comes to promoting healthy hair, further growth, in addition to a healthy scalp.
Not only that, it has a great smell, a little goes a long way, and it also creates a cosmetic thickening effect every time you use it. It’s a little expensive, but in our opinion it’s more than worth it.
